Usually, this is not supposed to happen with genuine programs that have been legally bought from a specialty store. Pirated programs usually are more bound to have such fatal errors. If you encounter such a problem, the best thing you can do to avoid any further complications is to uninstall the defected program. Because otherwise, you still won't be able to resolve the problem, since your operating system doesn't recognize the nature of the issue. If you get a fatal error when you're trying to upgrade a program, the problem might consist in your lack of some plugins. Usually, when you get the right plugin, that fatal error won't appear anymore when you try to upgrade your program.
Be careful when it comes to fatal errors, as depending on the program you're working with and what you're doing when the error occurs, you might or may not resolve the problem. But in most of the cases, if you're working on something with the program that makes that fatal error, you lose everything you were working in and you didn't previously save.
